Abstract

Objective: To find the etiological factors responsible for indirect hyperbilirubinemia in neonates.

Study Design: This descriptive cross-sectional study

Place and duration: This study was conducted in the neonatal unit of Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar from September 2019 to March 2020.

Material and method:A total of 410 neonates with indirect hyperbilirubinemia were included in the study to find out the causes of jaundice in these neonates. Consecutive sampling technique was used. Data was collected on pre designed proforma including name, age at presentation, gestational age, sex and cause of jaundice and was analyzed using SPSS v23.

Results: A total of 410 neonates were included with mean age 4.6±3.0 days. Of the total 266(64.9%) were male and 144(35.1%) were female.Among the causes of indirect hyperbilirubinemia ABO-Incompatibility (33.4%) was the major cause followed by Rh- Incompatibility (24.9%) while in 35(8.5%) neonates no cause could be established despite doing all the relevant investigations.

Conclusion: ABO-incompatibility was found to be the most common cause of indirect hyperbilirubinemia in neonates requiring admission in neonatology unit followed by Rh-incompatibility.
