Abstract

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder of small intestine due to gluten intolerance leading to villous atrophy and malabsorption. Given the autoimmune nature of CD, there are multiple autoimmune disorders associated including insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), hypothyroidism, autoimmune hepatitis, dermatitis herpetiformis, eosinophilic esophagitis and inflammatory bowel disease. Among the IBD, both crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are reported. We present here two adolescents patients who were initially diagnosed as CD and later presented with abdominal pain and diarrhea and after ruling out infectious causes, compliance to gluten free diet (GFD) and further investigations proved to be a case of inflammatory bowel disease.
