Effects of Whole-Body Vibration on Lower Extremity with Diplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy

Abstract

Objective: To determine the effects of WBV on spasticity, balance, strength, and quality of life in children with diplegic spastic Cerebral Palsy.

Study Design: Randomized Control Trial (RCT)

Place: Meshal School of Special Children Tarbela, Wapda Hospital Tarbela and Fatima Physiotherapy Centre Tarbela

Duration of Study: October 2020 to August 2021

Material & Methods: 38 participants of 5 to 11 years of age provided 12 sessions, for 4-weeks (3 sessions per week) intervention in two groups, control and experimental in which experimental received the whole body vibration in addition to the conventional therapy to control group. Pre and post assessment was made on the Modified-Ashworth scale, manual muscle testing, pediatric balance scale and cerebral palsy-quality of life questionnaire.

Results: WBV of high frequency along with the conventional protocol illustrates a non-significant (p value >0.05) result on spasticity and quality of life. Whereas improvement in balance and strength illustrates a remarkable betterment between groups as well as within both groups with P value <0.05.

Conclusion: WBV has effects on spasticity, balance, muscle strength and quality of life except its domain associated with social well-being.
